- 지표성과 행위 -
최근에 “지표적 믿음”(즉, “나”를 포함하는 문장에 의해서 적절히 표현되는 믿음)에 대한 철학적 논의에서 두드러지는 입장은 “제거주의”라 불릴 수 있는 입장이다. 이 입장에 따르면 지표성이 제기하는 특별한 철학적 문제는 없다. 특히, 이 입장은 지표성이 우리 행동을 일으 키는 데 있어서 수행하는 특별한 역할이 없다고 본다. 본 논문은 이런 견해에 반대하여, 지 표성은 여전히 중대한 철학적 문제를 제기하며 이는 지표성이 행위에서 수행하는 역할을 규 명함으로서 해소될 수 있다고 주장한다. 구체적으로 본 논문은 지표성은 행위 합리화에서 “선택지”의 개념에 의해서 환원적으로 설명될 수 있다고 주장한다. 직관적으로 말해, 어떤 사람을 나 자신으로 여긴다는 것은 그 사람을 직접적으로 컨트롤할 수 있는 것으로 여김에 해당한다는 것이다.
Indexicality and Action
A view about indexical belief that has been recently influential is what may be called “eliminativism” about indexicality. According to this view, there is no special philosophical problem posed by indexicality. In particular, there is no role that is expected to be played by indexicality in actions. This paper opposes this eliminativist trend, and claims that indexicality does raise philosophical problems, and that those problems can be solved by giving an account of the role it plays in actions. I argue that the role indexicality plays in actions is reduced to the role played by “options,” so that the former can be reductively analyzed by the latter. Intuitively speaking, identifying oneself with a certain person is a matter of taking the person’s behaviors to be under his direct control.
