- 믿음의 투명성에 대하여 -
믿음의 투명성이란 “나는 p를 믿는다”라고 판단하기 위해 내 마음 안을 살피는 것이 아니라 p가 참인지를 고려하게 되는 현상을 의미한다. 개릿 에반스(Gareth Evans)가 이 현상을 지적한 이래로 이에 대한 많은 철학적 논의가 있었지만, 왜 우리가 이런 식으로 자기 자신의 믿음에 대한 판단을 하는지에 대한 만족스러운 설명은 아직 제시된 것 같지 않다. 본 논문은 리차드 모란(Richard Moran)의 통찰을 빌어서 이 현상에 대한 설명을 추구한다. 투명성 현상은 합리적 믿음 주체가 자신의 믿음에 대해 ‘숙고적 태도’를 취해 자기 스스로 결정해야 할 것으로 여기고, 믿음의 대상이 되는 명제의 참 거짓의 여부를 통해 이를 결정하고자 하기 때문에 생기는 현상이라는 것이 핵심 주장이다. 본 논문은 또 자신의 믿음에 대해서 ‘숙고적 태도’를 취하는 것이 숙고를 통한 믿음 결정을 위한 전제 조건이 된다고 주장하며, 이를 근거로 자기 자신의 믿음에 대해서 숙고적 태도를 취하는 것이 합리성의 조건이라고 주장한다.
On Transparency of Belief
To know whether I believe p, I consider whether p is true, rather than looking inwardly at my internal states. Since Gareth Evans observed this phenomenon, which comes to be called Transparency of belief, it has been much discussed in the literature. But we don’t seem to have a satisfactory account of it yet. This essay develops and defends an account of Transparency, by drawing on Richard Moran’s insight on the subject. The main idea is that Transparency occurs because a subject takes his belief of p to be ‘up to him,’ and determines it by considering the truth of p. This essay also develops a novel account of the relationship between Transparency and rationality.
