- 아우구스티누스의 ‘내적 말’의 유비에 대한 상호문화철학적 이해 -
아우구스티누스(Augustinus)는 삼위일체론(De trinitate)의 후반부에서 신에 대한 유비로서 ‘내적 말(verbum interior)’에 대해 언급한다. 내적 말이란 어떤 것에 대해 우리의 머릿속에 떠오르는 ‘사유의 형상화’로 간략히 나타낼 수 있다. 아우구스티누스가 내적 말에 주목하는 이유는 인간 정신의 내적인 말과 신의 말씀(성자) 사이에 존재하는 닮음을 발견하고 이를 통해 신을 이해하기 위해서이다. 그래서 그의 내적 말에 대한 논의에는 ‘내적으로 생성된 말과 외적으로 발화된 말의 일치’ 그리고 ‘영원한 신과 육화된 신의 일치’가 유비적으로 나타난다. 상호문화철학자 말(Mall)은 오늘날 상호문화철학을 위한 해석학으로서 ‘유비적 해석학(analogous hermeneutics)’을 제시한다. 상호문화철학에서 유비적 해석을 시도하는 것은 비교되는 둘 사이에 놓인 닮음(겹침)을 통해서 유사성을 발견하고 이를 통해 타자와 타문화를 이해하며 그들과 소통하기 위해서이다. 말은 ‘유비’를 서로 다른 것들 사이에서의 ‘닮음의 관계’로 정의한다. 그의 설명에 따르면 모든 문화는 서로 다르지만 어느 정도 겹침을 공유하고 있다. 각기 다른 문화들 사이에서 서로 이해가 가능한 것은 바로 문화적 ‘겹침’이 존재하기 때문이다. 이 겹침이 두 문화 사이의 앎과 소통을 가능하게 한다. 이런 맥락에서 이 글의 목적은 아우구스티누스가 신에 대한 유비로서 제시하는 ‘내적 말’의 개념을 상호문화철학에서 말(Mall)이 주장하는 유비적 해석과 연관시켜 살펴보는 데 있다. 그래서 말이 주장하는 유비적 해석학에서의 ‘겹침’의 개념에 주목하여 아우구스티누스의 내적 말을 분석할 것이다. 결국 유비를 사용하는 것은 서로 다른 것들 사이에 존재하는 닮음을 통해 자신과 다른 상대를 이해하기 위함인데, 이때 이해란 무엇을 뜻하는지 위의 분석을 통해 그 의미를 되짚어볼 것이다.
An intercultural philosophical study on the analogy of Augustine's inner word
Augustine explains the inner word as an analogy to God in the second half of The Trinity. The inner word can be briefly described as a kind of formation of thought about something that comes to our mind. The reason Augustine pays attention to the inner word is to find the similarity between the inner word of the human mind and the Word of God(the Son) and to understand God by this.In his discussion of the inner word, the unity between the inner word and externally uttered words and the unity between the eternal God and the incarnate God appear analogically. Mall presents an analogous hermeneutics as a hermeneutic for the intercultural philosophy. The use of analogous interpretation in intercultural philosophy is to understand and communicate with others and other cultures through the overlap between the two. Analogy is defined here as a likeness of relation among unlike things. According to him, all cultures are different, but they share some overlap. It is because of the cultural overlapping that we can understand each other between different cultures. The purpose of this article is to examine the concept of inner word that Augustine suggests as an analogy to God in The Trinity in relation to the analogous interpretation of Mall in intercultural philosophy. Therefore, I will analyze Augustine's inner word, paying attention to the 'overlapping' in an analogous hermeneutics. The use of analogy is to understand the other through the overlapping between different things. From this discussion, we will see what the meaning of understanding is.
