The purpose of this paper is to argue, on the basis of Kitcher's ‘pragmatist ethics’, that moral progress can be understood and promoted from a naturalistic perspective. By saying that moral progress can be understood from a naturalistic perspective, I mean that we can grasp its nature and structure without appealing to non-natural facts or a priori principles. Additionally, being able to promote moral progress from a naturalistic perspective means that we can construct methodologies within a naturalistic framework that makes moral progress more systematic and stable. Moral p rogress can be understood a s overcoming the moral p roblems that humans face as a species that wants and needs to live together, but is limited in terms of altruism. In other words, we can understand moral progress not as ‘progress to~’ as a process of convergence toward a fixed ultimate end or ideal, but as ‘progress from~’ as a process of problem solving and overcoming limitations. This understanding of moral progress does not require concepts such as non-natural moral facts or ahistorical rationality. We can also construct and refine methods for overcoming moral problems by examining and reflecting on the ways in which our ancestors have overcome moral problems and limitations over the course of history. This is because moral problems reflect similar human mistakes, failures, or limitations. In this respect, it is possible to understand and promote moral progress from a naturalistic perspective.
