- 정치철학적 관점에서 본 『맥베스』와 리더의 조건 -
셰익스피어의 비극 작품을 일별해보면, 우리는 불굴의 의지와 지략을 통해 자신의 목표 를 달성하였을 뿐만 아니라 고매한 인격까지 갖추고 있는 그러나 어딘지 모르게 다소 지루 한 리더들의 성공담이 아니라, 보통의 인간과 마찬가지로 개성과 능력과 한계를 가지고 있 는 평범한 리더의 모습과 만나게 된다. 나아가 그의 작품은 리더들이 어떤 방법으로 목표에 도달하였으며, 또한 명확하게 승리를 쟁취했던 인물들이 왜 실패와 굴욕의 나락으로 떨어지 게 되는지 인상적으로 묘사함으로써 기존의 성공한 리더 위주의 담론과는 차별화된 리더십 론을 제시하고 있다. 독자들은 한때 정상에 우뚝 섰으나 반복된 실수나 판단 착오로 인해 나락에 떨어지는 영웅 혹은 가치관과 세계관의 근본적인 문제점 때문에 결국 실패하는 리더 의 말과 행동으로부터 더 많은 내용을 배울 수 있으며, (정치)권력의 속성과 관련해서 더 큰 교훈을 얻을 수 있다. 이 글에서는 셰익스피어의 이른바 4대 비극 중에서도 가장 큰 대중적 관심의 대상이 된 작품으로 꼽히는 맥베스의 몇몇 주요 등장인물(왕)을 리더십 스펙트럼 으로 분석해 보았다. 나아가 이 작품이 21세기를 살아가는 우리 현대인에게 리더정신 (leaderspirit) 차원에서 어떤 메시지를 줄 수 있는지 음미하였다.
Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Qualification of Leader in the Perspective of Political Philosophy
Shakespeare’s Macbeth is one of the most popular and interesting tragic drama in the western wo rld. In this a rticle, we would l ike t o interpret the character and action of the two dramatis personae named Macbeth and Duncan. This two characters appear as the absolute leader(monarch) of Scotland in the 11th century. The narrative perspective of the article is political leadership and leaderspirit of the king. Through Macbeth, Shakespeare created a character, who not only pursuit the political power and succeed to achieve it by force of arms, but also loose i t owing to lack of political wisdom and responsibility. He is the hero of drama named Macbeth. Meanwhile, Duncan appears as an weak monarch who cannot keep the throne for oneself. As Machiavelli emphasized in his Il Principe, a political leader who really want to succeed should have not only the power of lion but also the wisdom of fox.
